Knowledge of the manufacturer of this component, its symbols and references is mandatory. You need to know important facts to represent the components in the schematic. Engineers will design the circuit and analyze its feasibility.

After completing the technical work, the circuit sketch will be submitted for writing. Drawing will use the sketch to create a schematic image. The drafting department is responsible for ensuring that each component is rendered correctly. To do this, you must adhere to the following standards:

In many cases symbols are related to physical components. Change is a good example. Notice the relationship in Fig. 1. In studying this Chapter, look for other symbols that are closely related to its components.

Many different components are used in electronics. The scope of this guide will allow you to learn only the basics. You will start with resistors.

A resistor is a component that introduces a specific RESISTANCE into a circuit. See fig. 2. Resistance is the opposite of electric current. Resistance is regulated by changing the length, diameter, or material of the conductor. Resistors are usually made of carbon or nichrome wire. Both of these materials are poor conductors of electricity.

NUMBER. 2. Some typical styles of resistors. A-Fixed carbon resistors are rated based on their wattage rating. B — Fixed, wire wound, high temperature resistors with power ratings of 2 watts and above.

Resistors are indicated with the letters ‘ER.” Each component family will have a different letter to indicate, Figure 3.

Resistors are measured in ohms. Values can range from a fraction of an ohm to millions of ohms. Carbon resistors have a color code that is used to determine their value (see attachment for resistor color codes).

Resistors are also rated in watts. The value in watts is the maximum power that the resistor can safely handle. Typical carbon resistors range from 1/8 to 2 watts. Resistors above 2 Watt are usually wirewound. The resistor gets bigger as the voltage increases.

Opponents, like any other component, cannot be refined. Tolerances must be allowed for manufacturing faults. The tolerance will normally be a difference of 1 to 10 percent from the stated value.

A common objection is one where there is no choice. It serves the purpose of providing defined and declared values. This resistor is called a fixed resistor. Now let’s look at some adjustable resistors.

Rheostat is one of the variable resistors. It has two terminals. A typical use is to dim the light above your dining table. The symbol for the rheostat is shown in Fig. 4A. The moving arrows are called wipers. The wiper moves across the resistor which allows you to adjust the resistance value in the circuit.

In FIG. 4B You see the dotted line between the two rheostat symbols. This line refers to gaged or machined components. When the adjustment shaft of the D component moves, the adjustment of both rheostats simultaneously. Note: In learning this new language, electronics, you will find other components with arrows. See if they are still variable.

NUMBER. 4.A and B are two symbols used for rheostats. C and D are physical components. The diagrams in E and F show how the resistance wire in the rheostat is wound. Clockwise rotation of the wipers increases resistance.

The potentiometer is also a variable resistor. It differs from a rheostat in that it has three terminals. See fig. 5. Can be used to balance stereo speaker systems.

The potentiometer can also be used as a rheostat. The wiper is attached to one of the end terminals making it a two-terminal resistor like a rheostat, Fig. 6.

Tapped resistors are usually of the wirewound type. See fig. 7. It can have one or more ports along its length. Tapped resistors are typically used for voltage divider applications.

It is possible to purchase bundled resistors in one body. This package looks like an integrated circuit chip, Fig. 8. The resistors in the package have exactly the same value.

You will study a family of components called semiconductors. As components go, semiconductors are relatively new. These are the components that lead to the miniaturization of electronic components. Start with the diode.

A diode is a two-electrode semiconductor. This allows for the easy flow of electrons in one direction only. Flow from cathode to anode, Fig. 9. The designer needs to know the cathode and anode ends of the diode. This knowledge will help us to be present in the right way around the assembly.

Note the number 1N662 shown in Fig. 9. This number is the catalog number. Engineers will call this number to indicate the desired component in the circuit.

NUMBER. 9. Common two-door component boundary symbol. Form components A and B-Representative. A C-symbol with simple instructions is displayed. D — Label with designation (CR) and catalog number.

The zener diode is a breakdown diode, Fig. 10. This means it draws more current because the voltage meter is marked. Zeners are used to regulate circuit voltages. They can take one to hundreds of volts. The zener diode symbol differs from the standard diode symbol only in the way the cathode is shown.

The bridge rectifier is used to convert alternating current to direct current, Fig. 11. Alternating current is an electric current whose direction of flow reverses regularly. Direct current is an electric current that flows in one direction only. Alternators are used in our cars to convert the alternator output into the direct current required by batteries and other electronic devices. Bridge repair can be called full wave repair. it has four diodes working together to allow current in a single directory

Transistors are active semiconductor devices used in solid state electronics, Fig. 12. This component and all diodes except the elimination tube or vacuum tube. It usually has three electrodes: emitter, base and receiver.

There are two basic types of transistors; PNP and NPN types. In drawing symbols, the only visible difference is the direction of the arrow. The NPN arrow on the emitter points to the inside of the envelope (circled), (A). The PNP has an arrow pointing to the base, (B). One way to remember the NPN type is: “NPN” indicates that the pointer is “not pointing to”. There are other types of transistors, Fig. 1 3. This is the symbol for the unit you created
