Thanks to Apple’s new H2 chip, AirPods Pro (2nd generation) noise cancellation is excellent and a legitimate contender in its class. During my testing, the tips produced near-total silence, a term I’ve only reserved for a few sets of noise-cancelling headphones and earphones over the years.
Conveniently, while I was testing the AirPods Pro, the traffic in my neighborhood was louder than usual, giving me a particularly noisy environment to really test the feature. Fortunately, the latest AirPods were excellent in these conditions, allowing me to enjoy my workflow without interruption.
In addition to significantly better noise cancellation, the H2 chip has also improved the transparency mode of the new AirPods Pro. The mandatory functionality made annoying sounds (eg emergency vehicle horns, sirens, etc.) more tolerable without disconnecting me from the world around me. The improved functionality was a lifesaver on my morning rush hour commute to the office.
It’s no surprise that the second-generation AirPods Pro delivered phenomenal call quality during my testing, whether I was indoors or outdoors. Participants in FaceTime, phone, and Zoom calls heard me clearly, and so did I.

You can access AirPods Pro settings and customize their controls by simply opening Bluetooth settings on your iPhone—no additional apps required. Menu options include headphone testing and the ability to create a personalized surround audio experience by scanning your ears with the iPhone’s True Depth camera.
Pairing AirPods is as easy as holding them close to your iPhone and opening the case. After the seconds-long process is complete, the buds will be connected to all Apple devices using the same iCloud account.
The new AirPods Pro hardly differ from the first generation. Aside from the different placement of the set of holes, the two product iterations are virtually identical, sharing the instantly recognizable stem silhouette and iconic glossy white finish. It’s easier to distinguish the Pro from the similarly shaped third-generation AirPods because the latter lacks silicone tips.

The IPX4 water resistance rating and secure fit of the silicone ear tips make AirPods Pro just as suitable for exercise as the previous model. Unless you’re planning on running in heavy rain or ultramarathons, you shouldn’t be looking for a set of headphones with a higher durability rating.
I tip my hat to Apple for treating the latest AirPods Pro to the most advanced charging case in the industry. Key innovations in the accessory include an Apple U1 tracking chip like AirTag, an integrated speaker to play sounds to find it, and an integrated storage and customization rack. In addition, the included gadget is IPX4 waterproof, just like the headphones, so it can handle spills and splashes.
The maximum battery life of 6 hours on the new AirPods Pro is excellent considering the size, comfort and built-in technical features of the headphones. It’s also a significant improvement over the durability of the previous generation. However, talkative users who expect to receive a lot of calls with the new Pro may want the maximum talk time of 4.5 hours to be a bit longer.
Big competitors with longer battery life are bulkier and less convenient. I didn’t mind trading more frequent refill trips for a perfect fit and no fatigue.
