Osmo Mobile 6 was launched on September 22, 2022. It is the follow-up to DJI OM 5 2021. Osmo Mobile 6 is a smartphone gimbal, which uses a three-axis motor to be more stable for smartphone video to accept. It is compatible with both Android phones and iPhones, although the latter gets special support as some are iPhone-specific.
Inside the box, you’ll find the gimbal itself as well as a smartphone power adapter, a mini tripod, a USB-C to USB-A charging cable, a soft carrying case, and various papers. The tripod mount under the gimbal is only 0.25in in size, so you can mount it on your existing tripod.

The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 has all the hardware and software of the OM 5 but throws in a few extras to make it better.
To use the gimbal, you plug in the magnetic cord that’s on your phone. The magnet on the back of the clamp then attaches to the gimbal arm. The gimbal automatically adjusts to the size and weight of your phone. You only need to set up the gimbal this way once per session, however, as the magnetic attachment allows you to attach and detach your phone as often as you like without having to set up the gimbal again.
DJI has a ton of accessories that work well with the Osmo Mobile 6. The most popular is the Fill Light Phone Clamp, which is sold separately for $59. This replaces the included magnet and comes with a full light. The light has multiple tones and brightness settings and includes a USB-C cable. In addition, the DJI Combo offers the Osmo Mobile 6 Vlog which includes a standard gimbal package along with a wireless microphone kit. By using all these tools together you can have a very portable technology.

DJI always offers something new with its latest gimbal, but this year, it pulled out all the stops.
Like all DJI cameras, the Osmo Mobile 6 feels like a premium product. It’s been years since DJI offered a gimbal that wasn’t made of plastic, but the Osmo Mobile 6 is a great one. Although it is small, it does not feel like a toy.
In terms of size, the Osmo Mobile 6 is a little bigger and heavier than the OM 5. It’s not much: the 2022 model weighs 309g compared to the 292g of the 2021 model. It’s even higher when folded, weighing 189 x 84.5 x 44mm compared to the OM 5, which reached 174.7 x 74.6 x 37mm. So the move has been dropped this year. However, the gimbal still feels very portable to me, and I doubt that people who are very attached to the size and weight of the OM 5 will have any complaints.
Like the OM 5, the Osmo Mobile 6 has an additional stick. It’s the same size as before (215mm or ~8.5in), it’s stable, and it’s useful for musicians or people who take a lot of pictures.

One of the biggest design differences, however, is the new Side-Wheel. The Side-Wheel allows you to control the zoom and focus, while viewing the default view. As the wheel turns, draw in or out. The wheel pushes to change settings, and the steering wheel rotates the target instead. The wheel feels good. It has a great grip on your finger and the curves are smooth.
Of course, the size and quality of your zoom depends on your smartphone. For my Galaxy S21 Ultra, I can zoom to 0.6x or zoom up to 8x. There is noticeable vibration in the display when switching from an ultrawide lens to a wide lens or from a wide lens to a telephoto, so filmmakers need to be aware of this. However, when you switch lenses, close-ups improve in different magnification levels.
The installation is simple. Click Side Wheel and then turn the wheel to get a better view of what you have.
Another big addition this year is the display. There are a number of indicators that give you quick information when shooting. On the left side of the display, you have a battery icon and a connection icon. In addition, you have four modes of operation: Follow mode (stabilization of the risk), Closed Mode (keeps the camera as horizontal as possible), FPV mode (all three axes follow the movement of the camera), and Spin Shot mode (pressing the joystick controls the rotation of the camera) . You can also switch between modes using the multifunction button (represented by M on the front panel).

All the other buttons on the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 are the same as the previous models: the recording / shutter button, the button to switch from portrait to color mode, the stick to control the movement, and the trigger to lock the tracks or Active Track activation.

The iPhone-only feature is called Quick Launch. When you drag your fixed iPhone onto the gimbal arm, it automatically launches the Mimo app. This removes an extra step in preparing to launch your shot, which can be the difference between capturing a moment or a miss. DJI has no plans to bring this feature to Android devices, unfortunately.
