The One’s screen is slightly bigger this time (compared to last year’s One’s 4.7-inch by 5-inch screen). HTC has also replaced the M7’s back and home keys with on-screen navigation buttons. So, in most applications, the usable screen area is no different from the OG One Android’s immersive mode, however, allows the full 5-inch screen to be used in key areas such as image galleries, videos and Google Play Books.
My favorite new features on the One M8 take some inspiration from competitors like the LG G2 and Moto X. HTC has introduced some new sensors that let you go directly from the sleeping phone to where you want to go – without touching it Physical buttons Like LG Knock-On, you can double-tap your sleep screen to activate it (this will take you to the lock screen). But you can swipe on the dark screen to go straight to the home screen A swipe down activates HTC’s voice control to initiate a phone call Swiping left or right will take you to Widgets or BlinkFeed (more on that in a minute). All these gestures work only when you hold the phone in portrait mode
Motion Launch also lets you answer a call by holding up one ear Swipe up on the green “Answer” icon and then tap it Just pick up and talk You can hold the phone in landscape and press the volume button to go directly to the camera, and from sleep mode.
All in all, Motion Launcher is a pretty simple set of new features But I think touch-based shortcuts like this make for a convenient smartphone experience These are the kinds of features we’ll see in the post-Moto X world, and I welcome them

The HTC One M8 ships with Android 4.4.2 KitKat and has the new HTC Sense 6 interface on top. Modern Sense UI has a sophisticated and no-nonsense look that blends well with the phone’s hardware. It’s less bloated and gamey than Samsung’s TouchWiz, and no user interface changes hold back performance. Android OEMs’ custom UIs are always polarizing, but I think Sense is the least disruptive and respectable of Android’s core.
