While phones are getting bigger, Samsung is getting smaller. Starting at $800 and launching on February 25, the Galaxy S22 is the smallest (and cheapest) phone in Samsung’s new lineup. It has a 6.1-inch screen, which is slightly smaller than last year’s Galaxy S21 and otherwise identical to the Galaxy S22 Plus.
It’s best to think of the Galaxy S22 as a mid-range upgrade to the Galaxy S21. It has an updated design and a new processor, but it’s the camera upgrade that’s really the star of the show. Both the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus have a 50-megapixel primary sensor that improves color and clarity. All three of Samsung’s new Galaxy phones are better at taking pictures in the dark.

This is an update that makes the Galaxy S22 more enjoyable to use. But they’re also not game-changing updates that bring tons of new features to the Galaxy S22. They make Samsung phones better at many things they could do before, especially photography.
Between the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus, I think the Plus has the better balance of screen size and battery life for most people. The Galaxy S22 is easy to use with one hand or perfect for those who want to keep it tucked away in a pocket. But be aware that you have to sacrifice battery life.
The Galaxy S22 is more compact than last year’s Galaxy S21 and significantly smaller than the Galaxy S22 Plus and S22 Ultra. Its 6.1-inch screen makes it the same size as the iPhone 13, although the technology is a hair smaller.
In terms of design, it is reminiscent of the combination of Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10E. It has the same display as the Galaxy S10, but its smooth edges are reminiscent of the smaller Galaxy S10E. After switching to the 6.6-inch Galaxy S22 Plus, the Galaxy S22 feels cramped on me, especially when typing messages or email replies.

But I think people who generally prefer smaller phones will feel right at home with the Galaxy S22. After all, there aren’t many small phones for Android fans to choose from. Most of the top phones from Google, Motorola and OnePlus come with large screens measuring 6.4 inches or more.
The Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus also received a comprehensive makeover. Both phones have an eye-catching glass and metal design that feels like a step up from last year’s devices. It also looks slightly more premium than the $700 Galaxy S21 FE, which seems ridiculous in comparison.
If you plan to put the case on top of the device, you may not care about the design. But a nearly $1,000 phone needs to live up to its build quality and aesthetics, and the Galaxy S22 certainly delivers on that front.
In terms of overall display quality, not much has changed. Like the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 FE, the Galaxy S22 comes with a flat 2,340-by-1, 080-pixel AMOLED display that feels bright and cool enough for watching videos, reading, and playing games. Samsung has added a new feature called Vision Booster to adjust the screen to ambient light. But it didn’t make much of a difference in my experience.

Both the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus have received significant camera updates. Both phones now have a 50-megapixel primary camera, compared to the Galaxy S21’s 12-megapixel primary camera. This puts it on par with the Google Pixel 6 Pro, which has a 50-megapixel primary camera.
Both phones have excellent cameras that deliver colorful and sharp images. In most cases, especially when the sun was shining outside, it was difficult to decide who took the best photo. But there have been several cases where one of the phones failed. For example, take a picture of this bouquet. Samsung did a good job keeping the petals in focus, making them sharper than Google Photos. However, the Pixel 6 Pro’s photo is brighter.
But I preferred the Pixel 6 Pro’s portrait mode over the Galaxy S22 in this case. The view is close and I thought Google would retain the details better, especially the face. But both are high quality photos.
However, what is certain is that the Galaxy S22’s camera is a step up from the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 FE. The Galaxy S22 produced photos that were able to display contrast, sharpness and rich color in many situations. I didn’t notice much of a difference when shooting with a telephoto lens. Surprisingly, the Galaxy S21 has a 64-megapixel zoom lens, compared to the S22’s 10-megapixel zoom lens.

The Galaxy S22 takes better photos at night than the S22 Plus and S22 Ultra. Take a look at the picture below, taken in my room with all the lights off. You’ll notice that the Galaxy S22 photo is much brighter and more colorful than the Galaxy S21 and Pixel 6 Pro.
The Galaxy S22 sometimes had focus issues when shooting in very dark conditions, just like the S22 Plus and S22 Ultra. But in my experience, he was able to focus faster than his precious siblings in such situations.

The Galaxy S22 series is powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. Everyday tasks like playing games, swiping on the screen, and launching apps are as fast as you’d expect from a high-end phone. All three of Samsung’s new phones can boost the refresh rate to 120Hz, another factor that makes the phones feel fluid.

But I wish the Galaxy S22 had better battery life. The Galaxy S22 has a 3,700mAh battery, which is significantly less than the 4,500mAh and 5,000mAh batteries offered in the S22 Plus and Ultra, respectively. I was able to get through a full day with the screen refresh rate set to 120Hz, but just barely. With this setting off, I can get a day and a half. But that’s about the same length I get on a Galaxy S22 Plus or Ultra with dynamic refresh rate enabled. When testing the S22’s battery, I didn’t spend much time on video calls or streaming media—both of which drain the battery quickly.
The Galaxy S22 also scored the lowest in the battery test compared to the Galaxy S22 Plus, Galaxy S22 Ultra, and Galaxy S21 FE. It lasted 15 hours and 21 minutes, while the Galaxy S21 FE lasted 15 hours and 46 minutes. The Galaxy S22 Plus and S22 Ultra lasted over 18 hours each. Compared to the similarly priced iPhone 13 Mini, Apple’s phone lasted 18 hours and 19 minutes in our test, but it’s worth noting that the iPhone 13 Mini doesn’t have a high-refresh-rate screen. The battery test consisted of continuous video playback with the screen brightness set to 50% and airplane mode enabled.
The Galaxy S22 supports 25-watt fast charging, unlike the S22 Plus and S22 Ultra, which support 45-watt fast charging. Fortunately, a compatible charging adapter, which must be purchased separately, costs $35 more via Samsung’s website than the 50 45-watt charger. Some USB-C power adapters will also charge your phone, but speeds may vary.
