Smartphone One Review – OnePlus is a rare beast: a startup that makes smartphones. Their first device is the Android-based OnePlus One, which, despite its unnecessarily repetitive name, is an impressive piece of hardware in a market dominated by legacy manufacturers and charging the most for smartphones that share the same internals as the One. The OnePlus One is actually a great deal at $299 for an unlocked device, and proof that Google isn’t the only company in town that can offer Nexus-like affordability.
The OnePlus One is a monolithic device; with its 5.5-inch screen, it’s firmly in the realm of what we used to call a phablet device (sadly, the term is dying out as more phones scale to larger screens). But at least it manages to fit all that screen into the thinnest package possible — the device is only about 0.35 inches thick.

It’s a shade smaller than the Galaxy Note 3 in terms of overall footprint, but looks more like the Nexus 5 in terms of lines and the matte finish of the plastic back, which is somewhat rubberized for grip. As far as huge devices go, the OnePlus One is among my favorites, and the Nexus’ style is also visually appealing, with a slightly raised metal look at the top and bottom. It manages to be one of the best-looking Android phones to hit the market recently, even if the looks are a bit off-putting.

The OnePlus One’s performance is unmatched for a device in this price range, and that’s pretty much all there is to say about it. It packs the same amount of RAM and the same types of processors as flagship smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One (M8) – but manages to do it at a fraction (more than 1/2) of their price. device. And special is not hollow; their effect can be seen in the animations of the operating system and the performance of Android games and applications loaded on the device.
There were some issues early on in testing with strange visual glitches when accessing settings and the notification panel from the top bar on the home screen, but OnePlus was quick to acknowledge and have since fixed these issues with a software update – one of its advantages is that it can push this is possible without relying on Google or carriers thanks to the use of Cyanogen as the main operating system. This Android fork offers a hands-on experience in many ways, but with extensive customization options. It’s also a very capable performer, and in many ways far superior to the custom interfaces that most other Android OEMs layer on top of Google’s mobile platform.
Speaking of Cyanogen, it provides the OnePlus One with many of its tricks, which include the ability to completely change the skin of the device with various built-in and downloadable themes. By default, the phone came with the horrible square icon that was again ripped off by Android, but the thing is, I didn’t have to live with the phone’s creator’s poor design choices; instead, I was able to switch to a much more default KitKat look with minimal effort and no special permissions.
OnePlus is full of such customizations, and a quick look at any settings screen will reveal the extent to which you can change elements including the lock screen, notification/status bar, home screens and more. The whole thing is basically a playground with tiles, switches, sub-menus and more, and it’s very welcome for people who like to have fun with their phone. But for those who are happy to have a device that works reliably and consistently, and is an uncomplicated experience, this might be a bit overwhelming; most OEMs are trying to lean and improve the configuration program rather than overcomplicating it.

Yet for that reason, OnePlus’s entry-level device is something that will likely appeal more to die-hard Android fans than even standard Nexus devices. It encourages playfulness and mixing, which is in the spirit of the original Android OS, before Google slowly began nudging it in a more closed and controlled direction. In terms of software, this is a Nexus for Nexus lovers, as illogical as that may sound.
The OnePlus One is impressive in most cases, but the fact that it can pack such an efficient and beautiful display of this size into a phone at this price is perhaps the most impressive of all. The 5.5-inch screen has excellent color reproduction and with a pixel density of 404 PPI, it won’t show any pixels either, no matter how hard you stare at a normal viewing distance.
The screen appears to float on top of the glass on the front of the phone and displays text perfectly. It’s great for watching movies and photos, and if there’s a downside to it, it’s that some of the included tools, like the OS icons for the built-in flashlight and audio recorder, aren’t designed to be viewed on such a high-resolution screen , which means they look a little blurry and they look wrong.
The OnePlus One manages to do the impossible, offering high-end specs at a mid-range price. It does so seemingly without sacrifice (for example, battery life was excellent, especially when using the smartphone’s screen sparingly). The camera performs decently and is better than the Nexus 5 by a wide margin, although it lags behind the Galaxy S5 and iPhone in this category. But its flaws are small things, details that react by a few degrees rather than huge margins, and for a smartphone that costs less than half of many of its rivals, it’s nothing short of amazing. The OnePlus 10 Pro is undoubtedly the best phone the company has ever made. From a powerful processor and beautiful display, to a solid camera and smart design, it ticks almost every box you’d expect from a high-end Android flagship phone in 2022. And at $899 (£799, roughly AU$1,400), the phone is competitively priced against high-end rivals like the Galaxy S22 Ultra ($1,200) and the iPhone 13 Pro ($999).
It offers similar performance to 5G and a smooth, accessible interface. However, it’s let down a bit by mediocre low-light camera performance, the lack of an official IP water-resistance rating on most versions of the phone, and a few features when it comes to US models.
But even with these relatively minor issues, the OnePlus 10 Pro offers a lot for the money and is worth considering if you’re looking for a high-performance Android phone that doesn’t leave much of a dent in your pocket.
I like the look of the 10 Pro. It has a matte glass back, with an attractive camera module and a lovely green color that I think is nicer and more elegant than the glossy fingerprint back on the previous OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. It has a look that I think stands up well against the iPhone or S22 Ultra.
