Palm Phone Review: An Imperfect Solution To Your Screen Time Problem
When I say palm, it’s not really, you know, Palm (Opens in a new tab), the company that helped define the smartphone in the early 2000s with the Treo phones. New Palm (Opens in New Tab) may claim to be a brand, but it’s actually a new company founded by people who wanted to create a machine that would take people a step back in life. Given the amount of practical development over stealthy technology in the past year, the Palm phone has struck many, including myself, as perhaps the gadget that best represents the technological zeitgeist.
Even in today’s technology world, who among the few technophobes wants to use a device that admits it’s smaller and smaller than their first phone?
Here comes the second part of Palm’s selling point: It doesn’t have to. Palm is intended to be a computing device. Just like a sports car is something you usually only drive on weekends and for special events, the Palma is a phone that you only take with you on certain occasions, such as a day in the woods or visiting relatives during the day. .

But it would make life better. As I’ve said before, the idea of a phone designed to use less of the phone may seem ridiculous at first, but when you think about it, it makes more sense. But it’s an idea, and then it’s real life, and the Palm IRL can’t quite live up to its promise of digital ruggedness.

I say to Palma: This is first and foremost a conversation. Almost every time I take it out to groups or friends, I get comments about it. It is so small compared to today’s phones that it lives up to the expectations of the people.

Still, the 3.3-inch, 720 x 1,280 screen looks pretty good. The pixel density is 445 ppi, which means that images and text look as sharp as high-end mobile phones. The Palm also scores points for a well-regarded home screen, which is basically three rows of apps you swipe through with your thumb. This car looks and feels natural. Best of all, it’s not stuck with bloatware (which still exists—Verizon just kept a few apps and mercifully pushed them to the bottom of the list).
But as a practical matter, you can do less on a small screen: Messages take up a ton of real estate for starters. The apps only display thumbnail content that you can see on other phones (for example, you can see three tweets on Twitter, max). Even worse, I couldn’t find anything in the icons or text I wanted to tap. This is not a phone for big hands.
The screen can be a little frustrating (refreshing?), depending on the form factor. Shaped like a Zippo lighter or a credit card case. Palm in hand, you’ll want to play with it between your fingers in a way you never (or can’t) do with the iPhone XS.
The bottom of the phone has a USB-C port. The only physical button on the right side is the power button. There is no headphone jack. There are also volume buttons — if you want to adjust the volume, you have to swipe down from the top to reveal the horizontal volume slider.

I don’t like this decision. I’m sure Palm saved the costs by not having the volume buttons, but their absence turned out to be a surprisingly annoying inconvenience. Adjusting the volume on the phone in your pocket by feeling the volume buttons is one of those things you won’t notice you’re bending over until it’s gone.
By default, the Palm uses only one capable home screen and has somewhat odd navigation. Tap to go back, double tap to go home, and long press to go to the app switcher. I got used to it pretty quickly, but if you hate it, you can go back to the regular Android navigation bar, but it takes up a slot at the bottom.
It offers a face palm view with palm unlock and it works well – I really liked how it worked even when I turned the phone on. The iPhone’s Face ID is noticeably slower, but while I can live with that, I miss the XS’s wake-up feature. I remember often having to hold the Palm and its blank screen up to my face, wait for it to come alive, and then press the side button to acknowledge my presence.

However, it’s a bit unfair to single out the Palm for being slower and less intelligent than other phones. It’s clearly not a flagship phone, it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 chip (a processor that usually indicates a budget device). It has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, both of which are good but not great (though you can increase the storage with a microSD card).
But here: the imprudent Palma regrets that the Count is a fake. Well, it doesn’t have to be a flagship, but the owner probably has one, and moving to the Palm is an important step. Everything from apps to network connections and general actions slows down. If you don’t have an iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel or OnePlus in your other pocket, you’ll miss out.
There’s one more thing that’s missing from a typical “bigger” phone: battery life. To be fair, the Palm isn’t designed to be used as a regular smartphone: If you take this device on a trip, you can expect to use it two or three times to check emails or other things.
But even so. If I didn’t leave the palm alone more or less during the day, it would fade by the end of that day. I fired it up one morning and while it was running it only played music to the Bluetooth headphones and dropped to 60% after 40 minutes. It happened at 8 p.m.

It’s clear that the device is too small for background updates or notifications to suck up extra juice. While the phone is capable of these features, Palm defaults you to “Life” mode, which basically locks everything until you specifically engage with it by turning it on and unlocking it. In fact, it’s pretty smart, and I’d love to see MAS phones go in this direction, where I encourage you to turn off notifications or limit them to a few important apps. The digital way is about making your life your own.
