Smartphones are destroying everything else in terms of sales in the mobile market. These incredibly versatile devices have long outperformed regular cell phones. Thanks to even more powerful processors and increased screen sizes, so-called “phablets” are now entering the field of tablets. The line between these devices is increasingly blurred, at least at the higher end of the market. These crossovers of smartphones and tablets have taken many places in the list of the 10 best smartphones. As a result, most of the best models on our list are recently released devices. Still, here and there a brave old soldier clung to the top of the ladder.

Notebookcheck: Samsung Galaxy S10+ Review

The table above provides an overview of the best smartphones reviewed in the last 12 months, as well as older products that are still relevant and available. In the case of the same score, the newest device is listed first. All prices in the above table and price comparisons are updated daily and may vary. There are two new ones this month. However, Google Pixel 7 and Xiaomi 12T Pro did not make the top 10.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the flagship product of the Koreans and lives up to their aspirations to be the best smartphone. It has a large 6.8-inch dynamic AMOLED panel with a dynamic refresh rate of 1-120 Hz and a high resolution. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy offers great performance and can come with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM depending on the variant. Available storage capacities of 256, 512 or 1024 GB. The S Pen is also back on board.

The powerful camera setup offers a wide range of applications from ultra wide angle with macro mode to 100x zoom. Video features are not neglected in the process. A 5,000mAh battery helps the S23 Ultra last a long time and it’s also IP68 rated again, supports wireless charging, eSIM support, USB 3.2, UWB and more. It is only necessary to leave Wi-Fi 7 and support for Bluetooth audio codecs can be extended.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is available on Amazon, among others, with prices starting at $1,000 for the 256GB SKU.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 has a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED display that is very bright and supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The screen-to-surface ratio is also very attractive. The S23 is powered by the fast Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy with 8GB of RAM. 128GB and 256GB storage solutions are also available.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is one of the best smartphones of 2023 and its bigger sibling, the S23+, is another icing on the cake in some areas.

The 3,900 mAh battery helps the Samsung smartphone achieve a long operating time, and the triple camera allows you to take very good photos and videos. The compact phone is completed with an IP68 certificate and a long upgrade offer. Just ditch UWB and Wi-Fi 7.

The Galaxy S23+ not only has a slightly larger screen, but also a disproportionately larger battery (4,700 mAh), which means it also has a better runtime. It also has a UWB chip and can be purchased with 512GB of storage.

Galaxy smartphones can be ordered directly from Samsung, but are also available from all online retailers such as Amazon.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are similar in many areas. Both rely on the same triple camera, the core of which is the new 48 MPix sensor. They are also available with at least 128 storage slots and can go back to model versions up to 1024 GB. It also has UWB, wireless charging, MagSafe and IP68 certification on board.

The 14 Pro has a 6.1-inch OLED display up to 120Hz, while the Max smartphone has a 6.7-inch display. The larger model is consequently heavier and has a disproportionately stronger battery, which ensures a significantly longer run time.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is a foldable smartphone with a 6.2-inch AMOLED display on the outside. Unfolded, it houses a 7.6-inch panel. Both work with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The triple camera consists of a 50 MPix sensor and is complemented by three times optical zoom and an ultra-wide angle of view.

In the review, the Fold4 convinces with its bright OLEDs, IPX8 certification, fast Qualcomm SoC and long software compatibility. When folded, however, it’s quite thick and the UD camera on the large panel is quite poor in quality.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is available directly from Samsung, but can also be purchased from Amazon for $1,519.99.

The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro, as well as the non-Pro model, are the best gaming smartphones out there right now and are packed with powerful technology. The ROG Phone wins with a bright and accurate 165Hz AMOLED display protected by the latest Gorilla Glass Victus and a high touch sampling rate of 720Hz. The speedy Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 delivers impressive performance and is so well cooled that performance is minimally affected even during extended use. In addition, ROG Phone offers a variety of interfaces, dedicated ultrasonic sensors for additional control options, four DACs and powerful speakers.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The smartphones have plenty of storage and a 6,000 mAh battery helps them achieve long battery life. The camera setup has been improved and now relies on Sony’s IMX766 image sensor. The rather short update period and the relatively high weight are objectionable.

The ROG Phone 6 is priced at $999.99 for the lowest 12/256GB variant, the Pro model offers 18GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage and costs $1,299.99 direct from the Asus store. The phone is also available on Amazon US for $1,029.98 with 16/512GB.

The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra has a 6.67-inch pOLED display that offers a refresh rate of up to 144Hz and Full HD+ resolution. It is powered by a fast Qualcomm processor with 12GB of RAM. Internal storage is 256GB, not expandable. One of the highlights of the smartphone is the camera setup, as the Edge 30 Ultra is the first smartphone with a 200MP camera.

Motorola has managed to create an attractive smartphone with the Edge 30 Ultra that leaves little to be desired.

Oneplus Nord 2t: Once Again, An Important Feature Is Missing

Among other things, the bright screen is convincing in the review. In addition, the Moto phone can be charged very quickly both wired and wirelessly and offers very good battery life. Only a higher IP certificate and eSIM support would be desirable.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV relies on a 6.1-inch 21:9 OLED display that runs at up to 120Hz. It is powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and relies on 8GB of RAM. Internal storage is 128GB, which can be expanded with an optional microSD card. The port configuration is exemplary and includes a fast USB 3.2 port (2nd generation) and an audio jack. The 12-megapixel triple camera offers optical zoom in addition to an ultra-wide angle of view.

In the review, the Xperia 5 IV particularly convinces with the mentioned functions, which meanwhile are no longer available in the other flagships, but it also offers a practical form and good speakers. It’s a shame that Sony has abandoned the variable zoom of its predecessor.

The Sony Xperia 5IV is available from Sony’s online store as well as through the usual retail channels such as Amazon.

Motorola Moto G Power (2022) Review

TheOppo Find X5 Pro is a well-crafted evolution of its predecessor. It has a 1440p AMOLED display, fastSnapdragon 8 Gen 1 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, IP68 certification, fast wired and wireless charging. Its main focus is the powerful triple camera array developed together with Hasselblad.

In our review, we found that the Hasselblad’s color tuning resulted in slightly cooler images. Overall, the Oppo Find X5 Pro had no major faults, but it could benefit from a more accurate GPS modem. In this price category, we would also expect 6GHz Wi-Fi 6 support. Instead, the device is limited to VHT80 Wi-Fi 6 only.

Oppo smartphones are not officially sold in North America. GSM-only versions without international unlock can be purchased from Amazon starting at $1,700.
